Hutchison Medal Fund

Supporting a national lecture tour by the winner of the W.W. Hutchison Medal.

About the Fund

The Hutchison Medal Fund is an endowment trust fund that is part of the Canadian Geological Foundation (CGF). It was established in 2004 following a most generous gift of $105,000 from the Geological Association of Canada (GAC).

The income generated by the fund's capital is used to support a national lecture tour by the winner of the W.W. Hutchison Medal of the Geological Association of Canada.

The W.W. Hutchison Medal

The Hutchison Medal is awarded by the Geological Association of Canada to a young individual for recent exceptional advances in Canadian earth science research.

The award was named after Dr. William W. Hutchison, former Director General of the Geological Survey of Canada and President of the IUGS, in recognition of his many contributions to Canadian and international geoscience and his special interest in the professional development of young scientists.

The Lecture Tour

The national lecture tour provides an opportunity for the medal winner to present their research to geoscience departments and local societies across Canada. This promotes excellence in Canadian geoscience and inspires the next generation of researchers.

Administration

The Hutchison Medal Fund is administered by the Canadian Geological Foundation. The GAC determines the medal winner through its own selection process, and the CGF provides the financial support necessary for the subsequent lecture tour.
