Logan Legacy Fund

Preserving Canada's geoscience heritage through archival and library conservation.

Purpose and Origin

The Logan Legacy Fund was established in 2004 to commemorate the Logan Legacy Project. This project was a unique initiative undertaken between 2002 and 2004 to preserve and promote Canada's geoscience heritage.

The fund consists of a capital amount that is "locked-in" and used to generate income. This income is distributed annually through grants to support activities related to the conservation and promotion of geoscience history in Canada.

Library Conservation

Supporting the preservation of rare books, maps, and reports that document the early geological exploration of Canada.

Archival Preservation

Funding the curation of archival materials, including field notebooks and personal papers of prominent Canadian geologists.

Sir William Logan

The fund is named in honor of Sir William Edmond Logan (1798–1875), the founding director of the Geological Survey of Canada. Logan is widely considered Canada's most important scientist and a giant of 19th-century geology.

By supporting the conservation of materials related to Logan and his successors, the fund ensures that the foundational records of Canadian geology remain available for future generations of researchers and the public.
