Thayer Lindsley Fund

The foundation's inaugural endowment, supporting the core mission of Canadian geoscience.

Foundational Legacy

The Thayer Lindsley Endowment Trust Fund is the foundational fund of the Canadian Geological Foundation. It consists of a “locked-in” capital amount that is used to generate income to support the Foundation’s main objects.

This fund (and indeed the Foundation itself) was established in 1969 with a most generous gift of CAD 250,000 by Thayer Lindsley of New York City.

General Purpose

All general-purpose donations to CGF are received by the Thayer Lindsley Fund, supporting a wide range of geoscience initiatives across Canada.

Historical Significance

In 2004, the CGF Board decided to name the Foundation’s original trust fund after its founding benefactor, Mr. Thayer Lindsley.

Thayer Lindsley (1882–1976)

Thayer Lindsley was a legendary figure in the mining industry, known for his extraordinary ability to find and develop mineral deposits. He founded Falconbridge Nickel Mines and Ventures Limited, which at one time had interests in over 100 mining companies worldwide.

Mr. Lindsley actually donated a total of CAD 625,000 in 1969, with CAD 375,000 distributed to designated institutions (such as the University of Toronto and Haileybury School of Mines) to support geological work, and the remaining CAD 250,000 forming the core of the CGF.
