Updated Careers in Geoscience
The Canadian Geoscience Education Network (CGEN) has launched a significant update to its premier outreach tool: the "Explore a Career in Earth Science" website. Now in its 2.0 version (2024), this comprehensive platform serves as the primary gateway for Canadian youth, educators, and guidance counselors to discover the vital role that geoscientists play in modern society.
Exciting the Next Generation The goal of the Earth Sciences Canada careers website is to educate, excite, and encourage the next generation of geoscientists. As the global transition to sustainable energy and critical mineral security intensifies, the demand for Earth science expertise has never been higher. The website provides up-to-date information on various career paths, from environmental protection and water resource management to exploration and planetary science.
Comprehensive Educational Ecosystem The Careers website is part of a broader suite of CGEN initiatives supported by the Canadian Earth science community, including:
- EdGEO: Supporting local workshops that provide teachers with the confidence and resources to teach Earth science in classrooms across the country.
- WHERE Challenge: A national contest that asks students to discover "What on Earth is in your stuff and WHERE on Earth does it come from?"
- Four Billion Years and Counting: An accessible, popular book and resource set that presents the foundational story of Canada’s geology.
Bilingual Outreach With the 2024 update, CGEN continues its commitment to national accessibility. The English platform is currently live, with a full French update ("Quatre milliards d’années d’histoire") in progress to ensure that students from coast to coast can explore their future in geoscience in their language of choice.
Foundational Support The continuous development and modernization of these resources are made possible through grants from the Canadian Geological Foundation (CGF), ensuring that geoscience remains a visible and attractive career path for all Canadians.
